Wine Review: Domaine Rewa Central Otago Pinot Noir 2020

In my tasting today I review an organic, single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the Pisa flats in Central Otago. The wine is Domaine Rewa Central Otago Pinot Noir 2020, it proves harmonious, but is currently a little oak-dominated.

Domaine Rewa is a New Zealand estate wine producer, located just outside the small town of Pisa Moorings in the Central Otago wine region of New Zealand's South Island. Planted in 1997, the estate's inaugural vintage was its 2001.

Today, Phillippa Fourbet is the estate's proprietor, having purchased the 5.5-hectare vineyard in 2009. The property sits on a friable alluvial terrace with ideal soils for viticulture.

Phillippa brought her husband Yannick, and family, back to her native New Zealand to live - coming from the commune of Anduze in the South of France. Anduze is an historical area for potteries and clay products. Domaine Rewa now includes an on-site pottery for the production of clay amphora pots by Yannick, who crafts hand-made Anduze pots.

The Domaine Rewa "The French Potter" Pinot Gris is partially fermented in clay amphora with natural yeast and an extended lees contact of six months. Other wines from the estate include a Chardonnay, a Pinot Noir and a Late Harvest Riesling.

The estate produces over 15,000 bottles of wine a year and has expanded to include an olive grove, orchard, and recently planted trufferie.
