I'm Dr. Richard Ott. I am employed by Intermountain Women's Health Specialist. I work for Dixie Regional Medical Center. I am a board certified OB/GYN.
What made me choose OB/GYN is when I was going to medical school. A lot of times you hook up your personalities with the kind of things that interest you. I knew I wanted to be a surgeon. But when I hang around surgeons, since they deal with death and fighting off death so much, for my personality it was hard for me to deal with that. When I got around OB/GYN we're dealing with life, we're dealing with bringing life in. That joy helps you balance the sad parts. And so for me, that was really what drew me to it. I could still be a surgeon, still do a lot of procedural things, but in a very happy atmosphere quite often.
It's just a joy to get to know the patients and see them go through their life. That's one thing about OB/GYN too, often we deliver our patients babies and then when they have problems later in their life, we're there to take care of that too. So we have a very long relationship with our patients.
One of the funnest deliveries was when we were delivering triplets by c-section. Babies were going everywhere, and hands and legs and feet were going everywhere, and babies were crying all over the place. The dad handled the situation by just having a blank stare on his face, couldn't believe what has happened. You can't describe the look on their face. You can just see thousands of things going through their mind, like, "How am I gonna pay for this?" Double everything. It's fun.
