【Explanation】
Joya no Kane is the New Year’s Eve ringing of a large Buddhist temple bell (bonshō) in Japan. The bell is struck with a suspended wooden log (shumoku), producing a deep, lingering tone. Traditionally, it is rung 108 times on the night of December 31 to symbolize clearing the 108 earthly desires (bonnō) and welcoming the New Year with a purified mind. Many temples invite visitors to take part, and the pace is measured so each resonance fades before the next strike. Beyond New Year’s, temple bells are sounded for daily timekeeping, ceremonies, and memorials in Buddhist practice.
