First Look! Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC: The Baby GTD

This is the new top of the Mustang lineup aside from the $300,000 Mustang GTD, and Ford brought us out to Detroit to get an early look at it. We’re here for Ford Racing’s season launch, where Ford’s showing off its extensive automotive and motorsport endeavors like NASCAR, Formula One, sports car racing, off-road racing, Pikes Peak, and new customer cars like this Dark Horse SC and the Bronco RTR.

This Dark Horse SC is a big focal point for us, because I love Dark Horses. It’s got a 5.2-liter V8, a supercharger, an unspecified amount of power, and a bunch of performance upgrades over the standard Mustang Dark Horse. Ford’s calling it the “most advanced, powerful, and track-capable Mustang Dark Horse ever.”

Ford typically uses the “SC” moniker as an indication that a car is supercharged, and that’s exactly what this Dark Horse SC is. The standard Dark Horse is currently the top of the “normal person” Mustang lineup, and it has a 5.0-liter, naturally aspirated Coyote V8 that makes 500 horsepower and 418 pound-feet of torque. This Dark Horse SC moves to a 5.2-liter engine with a supercharger, and while Ford hasn’t released pricing or power numbers, the company has told us a lot of other stuff about the car. (Like the fact that you can buy a Track Pack with the Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes from the Mustang GTD, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires on carbon-fiber wheels, aerodynamic changes, carbon-fiber aero pieces, and more. With the Track pack, Ford says you’ll get 620 pounds of rear downforce at 180 miles per hour; 150 pounds of weight savings; and Variable Traction Control, which has five levels of assistance and the ability to fully deactivate electronic stability control (ESC).

Over the years, Mustangs have had all kinds of performance monikers, like “Shelby,” “Boss,” “Mach 1,” “SVT,” and more, and the introduction of the Dark Horse a few years ago marked the first new performance nameplate for the Mustang since 2001. The Dark Horse backed up its cool name with incredible performance.

The one I drove a couple of years ago paired its 500 horsepower with a six-speed Tremec manual transmission, which sent power to the rear wheels. (You can get an automatic if you want.) It also had no-lift upshift, which lets you keep your foot rammed on the gas while you shift gears instead of lifting it off. Stock, this car is unreal: the acceleration, sound, feel, launch, and more.

This Dark Horse SC is the step up. The way Ford is positioning this is basically a baby GTD. They both have 5.2-liter supercharged V8s, and the Dark Horse SC has a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission compared to the GTD’s 8-speed. Ford says compared to the standard Dark Horse, the SC is a “significant step up” in terms of horsepower, torque, and performance equipment. For reference, the GTD makes 815 horsepower, and Ford sells a Dark Horse and Mustang GT supercharger kit meant to give the engine up to 810 horsepower.

Orders open in spring 2026, and we’ll get more info (like price and power!) closer to launch. I can’t wait to actually test drive and review this thing.
