Omega-3 fatty acids are often talked about as “heart-healthy fats,” but their role during GLP-1 therapy goes much deeper than that.
In this episode of GLP-1s for Seniors, we take a science-based look at how omega-3s—particularly EPA and DHA—support metabolic health, cardiovascular function, inflammation control, muscle preservation, and brain health while using GLP-1 medications.
GLP-1 therapies are powerful tools for improving metabolic signaling, but they do not supply essential nutrients. During fat loss—especially in older adults—the risk of inflammation, lean-mass loss, and cardiometabolic stress increases. This is where omega-3s become especially important.
We review what actually matters when it comes to omega-3 supplementation, including why EPA and DHA drive most clinical benefits, why conversion from plant-based ALA is limited, and why dose and consistency matter. We also summarize evidence from randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses showing improvements in triglycerides, endothelial function, systemic inflammation, muscle protein synthesis, and cognitive support—benefits that are strongest in older adults with metabolic risk.
Finally, we cover practical guidance: safety, formulation quality, and why omega-3s are strongly encouraged as part of a whole-body health strategy during GLP-1 use.
This channel is about understanding the biology—so we can work with our bodies, not against them.
