Erythritol is a sugar alcohol used as a “no sugar added” ingredient in things like Truvia, some sugar-free drinks, breath mints, and other foods. Since erythritol contains just 0.24 calories per gram compared to 4 calories per gram of sugar, food manufacturers love it. But what about your body?
It is a relatively new food additive, so its long-term effects are not fully known. However, Dr. Stanley Hazen and a team at the Cleveland Clinic found that consuming erythritol and several related artificial sweeteners can increase blood clots.
Does that mean it could cause a heart attack? It’s not clear, but it’s certainly possible.
