On our journey, we met BAHARI MOJA in Mkokoni.
As a community-led marine plastic recycling project, they have created the only waste plastic collection centre in the area and even used some of the plastics to make eco-bricks for the construction of their material recovery centre. The goal of this project is to create a cleaner, healthier environment for both the local community and marine life and thanks to their efforts tonnes and tonnes of plastics have been prevented from going into the ocean.
With limited government support and not enough international action, communities are tackling the problem with their own hands. Thanks to support from other organisations such as NRT, Bahari Moja women's group have a foundation to build a sustainable community waste management program and we are looking forward to working together to close the loop on plastics across the Lamu archipelago. Bahari Moja is currently working in collaboration with Kiunga Community Conservancy, the Northern Rangelands Trust, Safari Doctors and Kiwayu Safaris.
