This week it’s Acupuncture Awareness Week and we have so much great content showcasing the amazing benefits of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine coming up. Make sure you’re following us @british_acu_council for all the latest news!
Chinese medicine is a holistic system which integrates our mental and physical health and each day this week we’ll be bringing you a video from some of our stellar acupuncture advocates designed to help you take a relaxing moment to relax and refresh your energy within your busy day.
Today the world-renowned Chinese medicine educator Peter Deadman @peterjdeadman demonstrates one of the most effective ways to calm the mind and nervous system – low and slow abdominal breathing, sometimes referred to as ‘diaphragmatic’ or ‘belly’ breathing.
This short, simple sequence only takes a few minutes, and yet done regularly it can make a huge difference to our physical and mental wellbeing. Learning to breathe lower down in the abdomen, is a key principle of Chinese medicine techniques like Qigong, and many styles of meditation.
It can take a little getting used to, but as Peter says, starting out with 5 minutes a day can help you get the hang of it. Diaphragmatic breathing can help alleviate anxiety and stress, as well as improving our energy levels and mood.
Why not take a moment, especially if you’re having a manic Monday, and give it a go. And let us know how you get on in the comments!
Peter Deadman is a Chinese medicine educator, co-author of ‘A Manual of Acupuncture’ , author of ‘Live Well Live Long: Teachings from the Chinese Nourishment of Life Tradition’, a Qigong teacher, and Fellow of the British Acupuncture Council.
