Turning a Busy Road into a Cycle Street

A lot of people who live in the towns and villages around Groningen, cycle to the city daily to go to work or school. To make cycling safer, the last 15 years a network of extra wide, direct cycle routes has sprung up. This network is still being expanded on and improved.

On one such cycle route, road works are on the way to turn part of the busy Helperzoom into a cycle street, or ‘fietsstraat’. This is a street where cars are the guests, with a speed limit and other specific traffic calming measures, making this part of the route much safer for cyclists.
