By December 1969, Laos had been embroiled in a seven-year civil war between communist forces backed by North Vietnam and the American-supported Royal Laotian Government. Officially neutral, the country became a key battleground in the wider Cold War and Vietnam conflict, leading to sustained instability and heavy foreign involvement. The war continued until 1975, when the communist Pathet Lao took control, abolishing the monarchy and establishing the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, ending the long conflict under communist rule.
