BMW M Hybrid V8 racing at Imola circuit

The BMW M Hybrid V8 is one of the LMDh prototypes competing in IMSA and the WEC

BMW's return to endurance racing was announced on July 11, 2021. On November 13, it was announced that Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing will be the first team to debut the new prototype in 2023.
The M Hybrid V8 was presented on June 6, 2022 and began testing at the Varano Circuit with Connor De Philippi and Sheldon van der Linde at the wheel.
In August, Team WRT was chosen as the team that will compete with two cars in the WEC starting in 2024.
Testing continues at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Motorland Aragón, The Glen, Road Atlanta, and Sebring with Augusto Farfus, Marco Wittmann, Nick Yelloly, René Rast, and Philipp Eng

The car was designed by Michael Scully, Hussein Al-Attar, Maurizio Leschiutta, and Ulrich Schulz

The Dallara chassis is a carbon fiber monocoque based on the Dallara P217. The minimum weight is 1,030 kg

The front end features the characteristic BMW double grille that feeds the ducts that direct air directly to the side radiator intakes in the cockpit. The front features main intakes with two smaller lateral openings to cool the braking system, and another central duct serves to recirculate air in the cockpit.
The rear features a stabilizer fin and rear wing

It is powered by the BMW P66/3: a 4.0-liter, 32-valve DOHC twin-turbo V8 engine. Additionally, there is a 50 kW Bosch electric motor at the rear. Total power output is 671 hp and torque is 650 Nm. The powertrain is mated to a 7-speed XTrac P1359 sequential transmission

The one-piece OZ alloy wheels are fitted with Michelin tires, 29/71-18 at the front and 34/71-18 at the rear

The first podium finish came at the 2023 12 Hours of Sebring with the number 25 car driven by Connor De Philippi, Nikc Yelloly, Sheldon van der Linde, and Colton Herta. The same car, without the latter two drivers, won the 6 Hours of the Glen.
This year, the best BMW is third in IMSA. In the WEC, it occupies fifth place in the manufacturers' standings

From 2026, the car will have a new front end. The changes include the headlights and a smaller kidney grille
