Nadi Shodhana, or alternate nostril breathing (known in some circles as Anuloma Viloma) is one of the most important breathwork practices there is in yoga. It quickly creates a sense of inner balance. You'll feel more settled and grounded, and it'll encourage you to let of the whirlwind of thoughts. It'll leave you feeling calm and quiet.
Here's a guided practice starting with counting in to 4 and out to 6, then slowing down to counting in to 6 and out to 8.
Nadi means 'energy channel' and shodhana means 'cleansing' or 'cleaning' - the focus is on cleansing or balancing the left (ida) and right (pingala) channels (which representing the yin and yang aspects of the body).
It's particularly good to do at this time of year - the autumn - when, in our Zen yoga work, we're focussing on the organ system of the lungs and the practice of letting go.
But of course it's great to do at any time of year when you need to feel more settled.
Let me know what effect it has on you in the comments.
