『••✎••』notes:『••✎••』
God this song is my serotonin song, but it also took me so long to work on. I'm not completely satisfied it’s the results (what the hell happened to the timing..), but I wanted to get this out asap so I don't have to worry about it anymore :)
I also did a lot of research for this song, but I don't want to overcrowd the description box, so I'm going to need to find a way to link references here..maybe in a google doc?
I almost hit the character limit here holy hell.
» Due to editing complications, some chorus chants are not included in the video:
0:32 - Mayoi chants "yoyoi"
1:33 - Shinobu chants "yoyoi"
2:53 - I don't personally hear it, but according to the official line distribution, Shinobu chants "shukou" (シュコー!) somewhere around this timestamp
» 0:06 - Onmitsu (隠密) is a historical term for spies or special agents in intelligence gathering, specifically for those of high ranking, like daimyos, shoguns, etc. (aka: ninjas ☆). Presently, it's an adjective for secrecy or stealth.
» 0:06 - An ondo (音頭) is, in simplified terms, a marching song, as translated here. In more specific terms, it's a Japanese folk genre with a distinct 2/2 rhythm (known as "ukare"). It's usually played during Obon celebrations, which involves a bon odori, or a community dance.
» 0:12 - "shugyou" here really does mean "training" (it's just written in katakana), but since it does show up in its kanji form later in the song, I'm leaving it as the romaji as a stylistic choice
» 0:13 | 3:04 - This string of kanjis are called kuji-kiri, or the Nine Hand Seals, in ninjutsu. They are derived from Taoist origins (called kuji-in), though are used in ninjutsu meditation since ninja traditions are tied in esoteric Buddhist beliefs.
» 0:52 | 2:36 - A bit of pun-like wordplay here on my part; a donden-gaeshi (どんでん返し) can mean two things: (1) a sudden plot twist that can completely change the story it's telling, usually seen at a Kabuki theater play, sometimes even at the very end of the drama; or (2) a revolving (trap)door where one can either quickly switch out props/set pieces to quickly change scenes (in Kabuki theater) or to quickly disappear from a room (in ninjutsu).
» 1:33 - Shinobi (忍び) is a synonym for ninja (忍者). Note how the kanji for both words is the same one used for Shinobu’s name (忍) ;)
» 1:57 - This pun is placed pretty carefully; 迷い (mayoi) is a homonym with Mayoi's name (マヨイ), the kanji meaning "hesitiation". However, the kanji pairing used here is 迷も, which, while still being pronounced as "mayoi (mo)", really means "confusion".
» 2:02 - Phantasm - an illusion, or something illusion-like
» 2:52 - The Five Escapes/Evasion Techniques are forms of ninjutsu art that were meant to help distract, evade, and/or escape from your opponent using a technique based on the five elements (fire, water, earth, metal, and wood). It's historically used mostly as a defense skill, but has been taking a more "fantastical" impression in recent years in manga and other related media (most notable being Naruto), such as using 火遁 to breath fire. (Technique names taken from citrinesea)
