Addiction is defined as a chronic, complex illness characterised by compulsive seeking of the drug or behaviour of choice and continued use of the drug or behaviour of choice despite harmful changes in the brain, nervous system and devastating relational consequences on the person’s life.
Addiction can be an intense and devastating experience for individuals, their partners and family members. It is important to understand that however it may be present, addiction is a complex mental health condition. Experiences of trauma and mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, can further complicate one’s addiction. Some people may even be living with more than one addiction at a time.
Hosted by Diane Young, South Pacific Private’s Addictions and Trauma Specialist, Diane will share her insights on addiction, including why people become addicted, how to recognise the signs of addiction and offer ways you can seek support for yourself or a loved one.
