They told me the compound was a breakthrough in rehabilitation. That it compressed time at the neurological level—give an inmate four minutes in the chair and they'd experience five years of reflection. Perfect reform through accelerated isolation.

My job was simple: monitor the treatment wing, escort subjects to the chairs, file the reports. Don't ask questions about why they all came back different.

But I noticed things. The reformed inmates didn't sleep. They sat facing their cell doors all night, hands folded, waiting. And they recognized each other—subjects who'd never met, nodding like old friends who'd served time in the same place.

By Week 3, I started testing them. They remembered everything about the facility. Nothing about their families. And they all smiled the same wrong smile.

One of them knew my grandmother's nickname for me. A name that wasn't in any file.
