Brandon - "The scapulas support the shoulder and move in rhythm with your upper arm bone. This relationship is called the scapulohumeral rhythm. The biggest mistake we see athletes make in rowing and pressing movements is locking their backs (scapulas) in place in an effort to create joint stability for the shoulder. This type of movement resistance can force the shoulder into positions it would normally not be in with excessive loading. This can also be one fo the common faults individuals make resulting in pec injuries. To better understand how the scapulas work we need to first demonstrate how they need to move through a full range of motion in all pressing and rowing movements."
The scapulas play a crucial role in supporting the shoulder, working in rhythm with the upper arm bone in what is known as scapulohumeral rhythm. A common mistake athletes make during rowing and pressing movements is locking the scapulas in place, thinking this will create joint stability. However, this resistance can force the shoulder into unsafe positions under heavy load, potentially leading to injury, particularly in the pecs. Brandon explains the importance of allowing the scapulas to move freely and how to properly engage them through a full range of motion for safe and effective overhead pressing and rowing.
