Underrated Portuguese Dishes in Barreira🇵🇹 Favas Guisadas & Peixe Frito🧡

Today I'm in Barreira, Portugal🇵🇹 Quiet local neighborhood just 8 minutes from Leiria city center, discovering the kind of food that doesn’t make it to travel guides—but absolutely should.

No tourist menus, no QR codes, no neon signs. Just real Portuguese home cooking served in a family-style restaurant where the food tastes like it's made by someone’s mom or grandma. And that’s exactly the point.

Here’s what I ordered:

🍽 Peixe Frito com Arroz de Tomate – Fried fish with rich, garlicky tomato rice.
🫘 Favas Guisadas com Entrecosto – Broad bean stew with pork ribs, slow-cooked in olive oil, garlic, and white wine.

And of course:

🍺 A cold caneca – because in Portugal, you don’t drink beer. You enjoy it.

From the crunchy fried fish to the smoky, stew-like beans, this meal is what I call "clean your plate" food. Comforting, rustic, and full of soul.

If you're ever near Leiria, skip the tourist traps and go where the food is honest and the portions are generous. This is what it means to eat like a local in Portugal.

If it’s printed in 5 languages and laminated, it’s probably for tourists.
If it’s handwritten, simple, or there’s no menu at all and the server just tells you what’s available — you’ve found the good stuff💯🙂

That’s the kind of place I went to. That’s the kind of food I ate.
