❓ COMMON QUESTIONS
Q: Do I need to grill the mochi (rice cakes) before adding them to the soup?
A: While grilled mochi is common in many regions (East regions like Tokyo), in Nagoya, and throughout Aichi Prefecture (and West in general), it's actually traditional to add the mochi directly to the soup without grilling.
Q: What can I substitute for Japanese mustard spinach (komatsuna)?
A: Several leafy greens work great as alternatives - bok choy (Chinese cabbage), regular spinach...etc.
Q: Why are there so many different versions of ozoni across Japan?
A: Ozoni is one of Japan's most diverse dishes! Every region has its own unique twist. For example, Kyoto-style uses white miso for a delicate, elegant flavor, while coastal regions often incorporate local seafood. Even within the same region, each family's recipe can be different, often influenced by where their ancestors came from.
