These great tips will help you be an even more amazing instructor!
Sometimes small changes in your leadership techniques can help people work more powerfully in the water. The tips below will help your participants optimize their workload, while keeping you safer as an instructor. We believe in helping people get the basics right!
We hope this list of tips will spark your enthusiasm and bring some secret sauce to your workouts!
1. Teach from deck - to see and be seen better: Because people need coaching to stabilize and move well in the water, the deck is usually the best place for most instructors. With large classes, you simply can't be seen when you're in the water. Therapy and personal training, as well as working with small, experienced groups can be the exception.
2. Get into the Water: Play, experiment, feel the water. Try new arm/leg combinations or check out transitions on a movement sequence. Planning your class in the water builds your aquatic muscle memory and makes you a better instructor.
3. Coach • Coach • Coach! People create their own workload in the water, based on how they stabilize and how they move. They have no mirror to see how they're moving. You need to show them how to stabilize and how to move powerfully. Workload is personalized and optimized when people understand how lever length, hand shape, range of motion and speed of motion affect their own workload.
4. Slow DOWN • Think BIG We know speed increases resistance in the water. However, powerful movement throughout range of motion is both FUNCTIONAL and CHALLENGING! Instead of fast, frantic movements: run BIGGER • ski LARGER • jack WIDER. Try maintaining the LARGEST possible range of motion (ROM), then increase speed! WoW!
5. STOP Bouncing • Work HARDER! Remember this is H2O 💦 not LAND.
Aquatic workload is not from gravity. In the water, work comes from aquatic drag forces, combating buoyancy and turbulence. Bouncing, squats, and land-based strategies don’t work! Use buoyancy options that elevate workload. Examples: Large, aggressive, anchored moves chest deep • Powerful propulsive moves in deep water.
Stabilize the Core • Control Buoyancy • Move Aggressively!
Final note:
We probably all know aqua fitness leaders who have injured themselves while teaching! We are Movement Motivators working in a hot environment, on a hard slippery deck.
Teach without jumping 💦 Coach more • Move less 💦 Drink water 💦 Encourage Excellence 💦 Stay COOL 😎
Use the AQX paradigm:
SHOW the move – MARK the move – COACH the movers!
