Loretta Young and John Newland star in this redemptive drama about partners in a marriage of convenience. Martha and Robert Gray have married in order to make a safe and comfortable home for Robert's young daughter... but when an unexpected gift of money is left to the child, her legacy proves to have far-reaching affects that enrich the entire family in unexpected ways.
Robert Gray is played by a regular co--star and director of this series, John Newland. Newland began his career in vaudeville while still in his teens. After moving to New York City to study acting, he signed with Warner Bros Studios. He went on to direct episodes of Bachelor Father, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and Thriller.
In 1959, Newland became the host and director of the paranormal television series One Step Beyond. The series ended its run in 1961 and Newland later hosted its short-lived counterpart The Next Step Beyond in 1978. He died on January 10, 2000 of a stroke in Los Angeles.
The part of Alice Gray is portrayed by Tita Purdom, an actress known for her appearances on Matinee Theatre (1955), Suspicion (1957) and Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955).
Little Alice is played by seven-year-old Mary C. Ker, born on February 14, 1950 in Riverside County, California, is best known for this performance on The Loretta Young Show.
James Hughes is played by Walter Kingsford, a British stage, film and television actor who had a long Broadway career, appearing in plays from the 1912 original American production of George Bernard Shaw's Fanny's First Play to 1944's Song of Norway.
On the screen, he specialized in portraying authority figures such as noblemen, heads of state, doctors, police inspectors and lawyers. He is best known for his recurring role as the snobbish hospital head Dr. P. Walter Carew in the popular Dr. Kildare (and Dr. Gillespie) film series.
Kingsford also made numerous television appearances in the 1950s. They included TV Reader's Digest,[3] Command Performance and Science Fiction Theatre. He died of a heart attack in Hollywood in 1958, aged 76.
