The Top 30 songs with 4 extras by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, REO Speedwagon, Boney M and Gene Cotton with Kim Carnes from the 1978 singles charts of Billboard, Cash Box and Record World magazines for weeks ending August 5, 12, 19, 26 and September 2.

Unlike for my books, Ranking the ‘60s and Ranking the ‘70s (with Bill Carroll), in which a weighted ranking system was used, I used a simple reverse ranking system, assigning 1 point to No. 30, 2 points to No. 29, etc. I kept it simple since we’re dealing with five weeks rather than a longer duration, like a year.

One song was copy-protected so I substituted a cover for it. You will find it ranked at No. 15.
