However, the foundation of successful weight loss remains a healthy, calorie-controlled diet combined with increased physical activity. For successful, long-term weight loss, you must make permanent changes in your lifestyle and health habits. Studies show that this can vary widely based on gender, age, starting weight, physical activity level, and medical history. With that said, it is possible to lose up to two pounds of body fat per week, or up to eight pounds per month. The more weight you have to lose, the more you may initially lose when starting a new diet and exercise program. It's important to remember that if you don't see weight loss on the scale, you may be losing inches, so don't become discouraged.
