Battle of Boxing Day, North Africa 1942: DAK v 8th Army

For the second year in a row we have a Battle of Boxing Day battle report. Although there wasn't a major, famous "Boxing Day Battle" for the 8th Army in North Africa in the way of huge, named engagement, there were significant movements and tough fighting occurred around Christmas 1942 as they pursued Rommel after El Alamein into Libya, with units assembling and advancing through dusty conditions towards Tripoli, leading up to the Axis surrender in Tunisia in May 1943.

The period around Christmas saw tough conditions and logistical challenges as the Eighth Army pushed west, with troops enduring wind, dust, and rain while capturing territory.

Key Events Around Christmas 1942 saw the pursuit of the Germans following the decisive victory at El Alamein (Oct-Nov 1942), the Eighth Army, under Montgomery, began a relentless drive west, forcing the German Afrika Korps into retreat.

Advancing into Libya and by late December 1942, the Eighth Army was advancing across Libya, with units moving hundreds of miles and facing difficult terrain and weather.
