A hip abduction hold is performed to increase the awareness of the contraction of the gluteus medius, which is the target muscle of the exercise. The gluteus medius has the function of abducting the hip when the foot is off the ground, but it’s more important motion is to maintain the pelvis in a level position when standing on one leg. This exercise works to increase the strength and endurance of a gluteus medius, therefore improving the stability of the pelvis, which will improve the alignment of your lumbar spine as well as your knees and ankles.
