Got clients with serratus anterior weakness? Doing the Push-up Plus pattern?
Yes, the Push-up Plus may activate or ‘strengthen’ the serratus anterior. Rarely if ever have I had a patient improve scapular mechanics or control using this pattern. In fact, this pattern perpetuates more suboptimal issues because it doesn’t teach the individual how to align or control their scapula which is the underlying issue.
A pattern we have found to work better for improving motor control - alignment and activation - of the scapula is the Modified Down Dog progression.
We start our clients on the wall before progressing them to a counter height and then to the floor. The individual should be able to control the static position first before moving them to a more challenging pattern.
