Irradiation is a very important concept I utilize in my mobility training (and in traditional strength work). Essentially we create full body isometric tension by contracting and engaging muscle and lines of tissue.

We utilize irradiation for a few reasons:

1. Creating full body tension allows us to increase the strength of contraction in the areas we’re trying to train. So I can direct more neural drive to the working areas to deepen the contraction and apply more stress and force on lines of connective tissue. Our biological tissue responds to stress, so if you want those strength adaptations, learning how to produce stress to specific areas is 🔑

2. Creating irradiation will help us develop greater body control. We teach the nervous system how to produce and control force through our ranges of motion. Having great body control is often overlooked in strength programs, though it’s a very important factor in the pursuit of true strength.

3. Irradiation also helps us minimize compensations. I can create full body tension and then focus on one joint in specific to train, teaching my body how to dissociate that joint and train it with greater specificity. Directing my force inputs to specific lines of tissue and really train the desired area without compensating elsewhere.
