This exercise targets the deep hip external rotators (Piriformis, Obturators, Gemelli) that are necessary to prevent knee pain and low back/S-I pain. They are commonly weak hip muscles that can lead to hip problems as well as faulty alignment with walking and running. If your knees are sensitive you can place a pad under your chins to take pressure off them.
