Assaad Elias Kattan - Sunday of the Last Judgment (Orthodox Scholars Preach)

The Orthodox Christian Studies Center of Fordham University is pleased to present the 2025 Lenten Orthodox Scholars Preach series, featuring short sermons by leading Orthodox Christian scholars.

The sermon for the Sunday of the Last Judgment is given by Dr. Assaad Elias Kattan, chair of Orthodox theology at the Centre for Religious Studies of the University of Münster (Germany). Dr. Kattan studied theology at the University of Balamand (Lebanon), the Aristotle’s University of Thessaloniki, and the University of Erlangen. He earned his doctoral title in theology (Verleiblichung und Synergie: Grundzüge der Bibelhermeneutik bei Maximus Confessor, Leiden 2003) from the University of Marburg. Since 2005, Kattan has been holding the chair of Orthodox theology at the Centre for Religious Studies of the University of Münster.

Besides publications in German, English, and French, Kattan has authored four theological books and two collections of short stories in Arabic: Qasem Schneider in Beirut (2013, German 2018) and When the Dragon Got Bored (2015). Together with experts from Lebanon, Palestine, and Jordan, Kattan co-authored the document We Choose Abundant Life – Christians in the Middle East Towards Renewed Theological, Social, and Political Choices (Beirut 2021). In 2012, Kattan was chosen by the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome to be the Sir Daniel and Countess Bernardine Murphy Donohue Chair in Eastern Catholic Theology. He was the first Orthodox lay theologian to hold this title.
